14 Sep Mild shower gel for a refreshing start to the morning
In order to remove fatty impurities on our skin, surfactants are added to the water for cleansing. They form a bridge between the water and the grease on our skin so that it can be mixed and dissolved. This process is accelerated by mechanical movement such as rubbing. Surfactants have a fat-soluble effect even in very low concentrations; when cleaning the skin the concentration is about 0.1 – 0.5%. This shows that surfactants are quite aggressive and you should take care to wash them off the skin thoroughly.
Especially sensitive and dry skin should be cleaned gently. The surfactants in conventional shower gels are often very aggressive and can wash away the natural greasy film of the skin and possibly damage it in the long run. This makes the skin more permeable to other harmful substances and can lead to skin problems such as irritations. For daily cleansing, you should, therefore, use a gentle cleansing product. The presented mild shower gel contains a very mild and skin-compatible surfactant mixture which hardly weighs down and does not dry out the skin.
Rose water soothes the skin and reduces redness. It also refreshes and smells wonderful. Of course, other plant hydrolsols can be used alternatively, or distilled water. An overview of hydrosols can be found here.
Plantapont is a very mild and skin-friendly surfactant mixture which is used for cleansing gels and shampoos. It cleanses the hair and scalp without drying out or causing itching. Plantapon is a clear, slightly yellowish and viscous mixture, which has an undiluted pH value of about 6.5-7.5. The surfactant mixture also has a very pleasant smell and good foaming properties.
Xanthan gum is used as a gelling agent that also thicken surfactants. This is why it is often used as a skin-friendly thickener for shampoos and shower gels. In the production of stable surfactant emulsions with high water content xanthan plays a very important role.
Rokonsal is suitable as a preservative for all cosmetic products and thus also for surfactant formulations such as shower gels. The preservative is well tolerated by the skin and harmless in the recommended application concentration. Therefore it is also used in natural cosmetics. Rokonsal is effective against bacteria and inhibits the growth of yeast and mould for up to 6 months.
Essential peppermint oil
Peppermint oil promotes blood circulation and has a relaxing effect. Thus it helps to relax the muscles and can also be used for muscular tension. The relaxing effects of peppermint are also the reason why it is said to help with tension headaches. It has a slightly cooling effect on the skin, which is pleasant and refreshing, especially in summer. In aromatherapy, refreshing and concentration-enhancing effects are attributed to the oil.
Essential bergamot oil
Bergamot oil improves the skin tone and has healing and antibacterial properties. Bergamot oil is said to have a brightening and balancing effect on the psyche.
Application and shelf life
- The shower gel with the suggested essential oils is best suited for the morning shower. The essential oils of peppermint and bergamot refresh the body and promote concentration.
- For the evening shower, essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, or ylang-ylang are recommended.
To protect the shower gel from water in the shower, you should use a pump dispenser. This way the shower gel will last longer and can be used for up to 6 months.
