24 Apr Homemade natural toothpaste with coconut oil
There are many reasons to throw the empty toothpaste tube into the trash and make your homemade toothpaste from now on. There are numerous questionable ingredients contained in conventional toothpaste. Even if the toothpaste is usually not swallowed, we absorb the ingredients through the mucous membranes of the mouth. Fluorides, for example, act as a cell poison and inhibit the enzymes that are necessary for metabolism. This happens slowly and over a long period of time and therefore goes unnoticed. It is only after years that damages to health can occur. More about this here.
The list of harmful ingredients is long and includes sodium lauryl sulfate, abrasives, parabens, PEGs, and artificial sweeteners. To have control over the ingredients you use and to contribute to the zero-waste movement, you can easily and naturally make your own toothpaste.
Raw Materials Used
Coconut oil has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic effects. It does not have an obtrusive taste and ensures the right consistency of the toothpaste. A study from 2012 proved for the first time the antibacterial effect of coconut oil in the oral flora. This is due to the lauric acid contained in the flesh of the coconut.
When buying coconut oil, make sure that it is organic coconut oil.
Essential peppermint oil
Due to its high menthol content, essential peppermint oil is ideal for relieving bad breath. In addition, its antibacterial effect combats bacteria that can cause gum inflammation.
Here you can find other essential oils.
Xylitol or also called birch sugar tastes and looks like sugar. It falls into the category of sugar alcohols but has significantly fewer calories than conventional sugar. In contrast to sugar, it is also tooth-caring. Xylitol stimulates the formation of saliva in the mouth and thus the calcium phosphate contained in the saliva can form and harden. In addition, acids in the mouth are diluted, which inhibits the production of bacteria. Caution! Xylitol is highly toxic for dogs!

- The homemade toothpaste can be used like any other conventional toothpaste.
