13 Sep DIY Light Day Cream with Natural Ingredients
Only if you make your face cream yourself, you can control what exactly is in it. Instead of synthetic preservatives, colorants and fragrances, only natural ingredients should be applied to your skin. We show you how it works.
For us, the most important thing about a homemade day cream is that it cares for your skin without lying heavy on your skin and leaving a greasy shine. The super simple recipes for homemade face creams without a water phase, where only different fats are melted and mixed with oils, we will not consider for a day cream recipe. We need a water phase for this recipe and to combine this water phase with the oil phase we also need an emulsifier. Check out some basic knowledge about emulsions first.
The recipe for our light day cream is nevertheless easy and suitable for beginners as well as advanced stirrers. The preparation of the cream itself is not difficult, but it is important that you pay special attention to cleanliness in all steps of the process so that your cream remains free of germs and lasts for a long time. Make sure to clear and disinfect your work surface (preferably with 70% alcohol or 60 – 10% isopropanol). Also disinfect your hands and all auxiliary items such as spatulas, beakers, stirrers and storage.
Used Raw Materials
Rose water soothes the skin, strengthens its protective shield and reduces redness. It also refreshes and smells wonderful. Of course other hydrosols such as thyme or witch hazel hydrosol can also be used for the water phase.
Distilled or demineralized water
Normal tap water usually has a too high lime content and the ions in the water can negatively influence the properties of the preparations. You could also use boiled mineral water, but for cosmetic purposes you also want to avoid minerals and bacteria.
Glycerine has a very moisturizing effect on the skin and increases its elasticity. Thanks to its ability to bind water, glycerine has a stabilizing effect on an emulsion and improves its consistency.
The oil has anti-inflammatory effects, heals, and nourishes stressed skin. The antibacterial and disinfecting effects also make argan oil a suitable oil for blemished skin and skin prone to acne. At the same time, argan oil prevents the skin from drying out and thus ensures smooth and supple skin.

Almond oil is a versatile base oil suited for all skin types. The extremely mild oil is very well tolerated and penetrates well into the skin, even into deeper skin layers. For rough, dry and scaly skin and also for combination and oily skin, it reduces moisture deficiency and skin roughness and makes the skin pleasantly soft and elastic. The tocopherol content of the oil has antioxidant and skin-protecting effects. Almond oil is also considered a light, natural sun protection.

Berry wax is suitable as a consistency-giving, slightly co-emulsifying, and refatting component in cosmetic products. It can also be used as a vegan substitute for beeswax. In skincare applications, however, it is much lighter and less film-forming than beeswax.
Squalane, at 5 % – 12 %, is one of the main natural components of sebum, which ensures that the skin does not dry out. Squalane ensures a more moisturized skin, in which fewer wrinkles form by reducing the skin’s loss of moisture. The oil also has an excellent spreading ability (spreadability), which results in a smooth skin feeling. It can, therefore, improve the spreading properties of an emulsion without forming a disturbing greasy film and gives the emulsion a silky “finish”.
This emulsifier is suitable for light creams that do not leave a film on the skin. Montanov L is an emulsifier for light lotions or moisturizing fluids. Emulsions based on this emulsifier have a quite thin flow stream.
Nicotinamide is a commonly used substance for topical acne treatment. Studies show that the vitamin B3 derivative has an anti-inflammatory effect and leads to an improvement of acne.
D-panthenol increases the skin’s moisture retention capacity and thus supports the new formation of skin cells and contributes to the regeneration of the skin. This is particularly important for acne skin. Even with an application rate of 1% it strengthens the barrier layer of the skin and improves its elasticity. Itching and redness of the skin are reduced.
Vitamin E oil
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals. These aggressive molecules are constantly created during the natural metabolic processes in the body. In addition, vitamin E also stabilizes the durability of oily substances by slowing down their oxidation and rancidity.
The preservative Rokonsal is suitable for emulsions but also for shampoos and shower gels. It is able to act against bacteria and at the same time inhibits the growth of yeast and mould.
